Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream for Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is a non-fiction book about the author's life from birth to achieving his desire for peace in Africa. He was born during the colonial era when members of the colonial force would come to his community with about ten officers to issue a single arrest warrant. His family was affected by death since some of his siblings died at a young age, and Fodil, his father's son from a previous marriage, became the head of the family. He worked at the local pharmacy, making him respected in society. He met Dr. Abdelkrim El Khatib, Morocco's first surgeon, but by the time he met him, he was the leader of the Moroccan Liberation Army. Morocco was at war, and the author and other hundred people found themselves surrounded by the Morocco Liberation Army. Among the group with the author were fighters from a special unit called La Main Noire; if they completed the mission, they would flee to the northern zone.
The book contains pictures of the people relevant to the story; the author met in his journey of finding peace in Africa. The story is the author's real life, and the photos made the story interesting as I tried to picture the struggles they went through by looking at the pictures. I liked how inspiring the story was since, despite the struggles, he managed to achieve what he desired. He was in France, where Muslims were discriminated against, but that didn't stop him from fighting for what he thought was right. Even though the story was based on a true life story, the characters were developed. The author introduced each character by mentioning some brief information about them. It helped familiarize the reader with the characters finding the book enjoyable.
The book was enjoyable, but I think the author added more stories in the introduction that made the book long and were not relevant to the book's main storyline. Some of them were necessary since he needed the reader to understand where he come from, but he should have left some details and explained a few of them.
I rate A Dream for Peace by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah four out of five stars. The book was professionally edited since it had an error. The book was educative on the history of Africa and inspired readers to chase what they believe despite the challenges. I noticed a rare thing in non-fiction books which was character development. The characters were well-developed, and the author even provided pictures.
I recommend this book to people interested in African history and novels about peace. The book talks about the author's journey of finding peace for Africa and provides African history during the process.
