We are Voulhire is told from several perspectives of characters within the kingdom of Voulhire. Galen is the most prominent and similar to the reader. Galen immigrates from a war-torn land into Voulhire giving a sense of wonder and innocence to the events of the kingdom. He shows differences between the Land of the Princes and Voulhire, such as the people's drive for more out of life than just survival. Galen gains a few friends along the way that will certainly help with his future endeavors. All the character stories center around one fishing village called Hillport. The town is seemingly inconsequential until all the stories are together. We see how one town can have an impact on the status of a country. How even the smallest of people can affect the future of a nation. I am interested to see where Voulhire ventures next and how the story of Galen will transform.

Matthew Tysz illustrates a beautiful world with a unique perspective on magic wielding. It is similar to combining magic and science. Tysz covers all aspects of the nation without becoming long-winded in his explanations of politics or commerce. Tysz's characters are fully developed and intriguing, such as Rowan a quirky financier. Rowan has a deeper side to his story about why he is staying with Galen even though his official job has ended. He also helps to move the storyline along moving Galen thru the country on an adventure of seemingly simple tasks.

Similar to how a snowball rolls down a hill and grows in size, the reader can see how these small acts tumble together to propel the story forward. I enjoyed the portrayal of the characters and how certain parts seem written as if they are looking back at what they might have done differently. Voulhire is a land of subtle misdirection leading the reader in a dance of intrigue.

I could not find any notable downsides within this book. The characters are intriguing, the country is enthralling, and the quality of writing is satisfactory. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because I enjoyed learning about Voulhire, and it appears professionally edited. The book does have minor uses of profanity.

I recommend this book to fantasy lovers because it has such a nicely developed world. I am now on the lookout for Matthew Tysz's other works involving Voulhire. Voulhire has occupied my mind and urges me to discover more.
