Review of And Then I Met Margaret
In his memoir And Then I Met Margaret, Rob White shares ordinary, everyday experiences from his life that become extraordinary in his quest for transformation. White begins his book by explaining that he spent a small fortune trying to find a guru to help him feel as rich on the inside as he appeared on the outside. However, it was the unexpected gurus present in everyday experiences that provided the transformational moments where White could better understand himself and life in general. This book is centered around debunking “untruths,” which are myths that we believe about ourselves. In a powerful moment in this book, White shares that deconstructing a myth involves more than just revealing an untruth about oneself. Rather, he argues that people must go out into the world and act contrary to the myth in order for real transformation to occur. White shares stories from throughout his life in order to share the wisdom that was once shared with him. With themes of kindness, power, truth, and forging your own path, this book is a joyful read that will bring wisdom and optimism to the darkest moments in life.
The organization of this book is superb. Each chapter is short and begins with an untruth that White once believed. After White shares a brief story from his life in the chapter, he repeats the untruth and corrects it to reveal the reality. I especially like how neatly each lesson is wrapped up, and it is easy to read just a few chapters at a time. Readers remain engaged throughout the entire book because the chapters are brief and entertaining, yet White still manages to make each lesson extremely impactful. Furthermore, it does not feel like White is preaching at his audience or adopting a holier-than-thou attitude. Rather, the lessons shared are heartfelt and transferrable to everyday life as long as we are willing to dedicate the time and effort to affect change.
There are very few things that I dislike about this book. I do believe that some chapters could be omitted as they share similar lessons. Also, the chapters where White shares his quest for meaning while he possesses privilege and wealth make it slightly more difficult to connect with him and the message that he shares. The book does not have many grammatical errors, but there are some missing quotation marks that cause a little confusion. However, the message of each chapter always shines through, and the complaints that I have do not overpower the positive aspects.
I would recommend this book for any adult looking for a bit of wisdom and direction in life. While some books of this nature involve religion as a cornerstone for finding wisdom, White never mentions his spirituality, so those of all faiths will enjoy this book. I especially believe that college students will relate to the chapters where White describes his experiences in school. His description of feeling lost and trying to find a place in the world will resonate with readers experiencing similar struggles.
Overall, I rate this book four out of five stars. It was truly an enchanting book, and I believe that readers will walk away with a lot of food for thought. One star was deducted for some repetitive chapter and occasional grammatical errors, but I still highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to gain a little wisdom.
