E. Alan Fleischauer
Reconfigurement

Fleischauer takes the time to lay out a handbook of what you need to know in your upcoming retirement. He specifically states he wants to target the right and left-brain folks, so it is a book for everyone. Specifically, it is for people in 50-60's because this book might be more pertinent for them at the time of reading. However, everyone would like to retire one day, so the text is very accessible. Fleischauer recommends books to read, career aptitude tests, and websites and hands over a wealth of information that people aren't always taught. He concludes the book with some general takeaways, and one resonates with me strongly and it is don't wait until retirement to enjoy your life. Take time to plan and just keep on enjoying life and let the good become better.

Fleischauer had some amazing talking points in this book. For example, he talked about wills & trusts, Medicare & Medicaid, 401K's, IRA & other investments, long-term care, social security, budgets, and just about all the hot-button titles that come with retirement. He drives home the point several times that generations are living longer, and we are likely to outlive the generation before, so planning now is more important than ever. In between all these heavy topics he has a lot of personality and voice in this book. He tells jokes between loads of facts, and often laughs at his own jokes with it literally saying "Ha." or something about it not being that bad. I appreciate that he acknowledges that these are some heavier topics and choose to use jokes to lighten it up. I shared a few with friends and family and they loved the humor. Fleischauer clearly took his time collecting facts in this book and carefully constructing them together. I didn't notice any errors in the text. It seemed to have been professionally checked over numerous times.

As mentioned before Fleischauer does touch on some heavy topics and with the wealth of information, he is trying to share some chapters are inherently dense. Fleischauer does thank you for slugging thru it with him, but sometimes it seems like an endless pot of information that reminds you that the government is messed up and it seems like you will never get thru the information. I hope Fleischauer continues to share this information, but maybe in other formats. He acknowledges that this information is forever changing and what you really should do is consult a lawyer, accountant, financial advisor, and a plethora of professionals who could narrow down what you need based off your needs and align with current state and federal laws. Clearly, he couldn't address all those topics, so I have to say he did a good job keeping it on a need-to-know basis but person to person reading this book you must move forward, dive deeper, search more, and fully understand this as a starting point.

With that being said, I highly recommend everyone read this book or something similar immediately. These things are not being taught in schools to this depth. When people are learning these things, it is too late in life and overwhelming. This is a text that is digestible to cut down on the urgency even late in life, but at the same time, Reconfigurement brings motivation to get started. It gives you a starting place and by the end of the book you know it is time to start.

I would rate this text a 4 out of 5. Fleischauer's humor is a bright light in topics some folks simply find despairing. Talking about retirement and planning for another stage in life is terrifying and this a realistic action plan and a fantastic motivator to really get moving to make the best of your "Golden Years."
