Orcas Forever by Marie-Paule Mahoney is a beautifully illustrated nonfiction work of art about the lives of orcas, also known as killer whales. The book’s main theme revolves around the life of southern resident orcas of the Salish Sea located between the coasts of the United States and Canada. The author has described true life events experienced by these orcas in a lively and inspirational manner. The author – a retired educator – has provided valuable information about the lives of orcas, their diet, their way of communication, familial structure, their behaviors, and traditions. The author has precisely mentioned the reasons why orcas are becoming extinct due to human interference leading to a reduction in the population of Chinook salmon, which makes up a significant amount of orcas’ diet.

The book is short and comprehensive yet full of enlightening information about the lives of killer whales. The author has done a marvelous job of providing this information in a fun and engaging way in a storytelling manner. Ginger Triplett has done equally spectacular work of converting the words of the author into eye-catching illustrations.

I did not find anything negative about the book. The book is aimed to inform children about orcas and how to save them from becoming extinct. But I think the book is also useful to enlighten adults about these important and unique sea creatures and their way of living. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the delivery of a baby orca, and how his mother, Tahlequah J35, takes care of her newborn baby.

The language of the book is plain and flows smoothly. The book is exceptionally well-edited, and I did not find any mistakes. I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars for the above reasons.

I recommend the book to animal lovers, especially those who want to learn about endangered species. The book can be a beneficial addition to secondary school libraries, as well as public libraries. The book is super educative as well as influential, leaving a lasting impact on the reader to do something to save these sea creatures. The author has provided a bibliography that leads the reader to learn more about orcas.
