Family is the most precious thing a human being could have. It is not always defined by biology. Family can be found in people who are not necessarily related to you. Love and care are the qualities that usually make a family bond stronger. Kalayla by Jeannie Nicholas is a very heartwarming book about a little girl named Kalayla, who finds love and care in the most unlikely of places. Kalayla and her mother find it difficult to get back on their feet after the death of Kalayla's father. Because of this tragedy, Maureen, her mother, has to figure out how their family will survive and ends up working a lot. This gives Kalayla a lot of free time on her hands as she is left to her own devices. During this time, she runs into an old woman named Lena. This story talks about the journey of Kalayla as she reignites her relationship with her mother and discovers new friendships.

I found the main character rather interesting. Although she was a young girl, she had the attitude of a grown woman. That is what I loved most about the main character. She carried herself well for an 11-year-old, and she was very strong-willed. Despite her mother not being present at all times, she was still able to survive on her own. She was able to prepare her own meals and make some money for herself. This showed how independent she was. One of such instances was when Kalayla was working at the laundry. Her job was to watch over people's clothing so that they would not get stolen. She did it so diligently. This shows how determined the main character was.

What I loved most about this book was the development of each of the characters and how they were able to heal from their past hurt. This book dives into topics like grief and depression. The book shows us how each of the characters were able to learn from their mistakes and grow. Lena realizes that she has to forgive herself for her past mistakes and move on. I admired the fact that Lena decided to help keep Kalayla off the streets. I felt like Lena was trying to make up for her past mistakes by helping Kalayla. I loved how each of the characters had their own different, unique personalities. This made the book much more interesting. I loved how fluent and expressive the author was.

I loved everything about this book. It was easy to digest and comprehend. I will award this book 5 out of 5 stars because there was nothing I disliked about it. There were no grammatical errors. I loved that the author wrote from each character's point of view. This made it easier for the readers to connect with each of the characters.

I will recommend this book to people who are interested in stories about family, love, and friendship. This book does contain certain topics like racism, grief, depression, and domestic violence. I will not recommend it to people who are uncomfortable with such topics.
