Review of Phobia Relief
PHOBIA RELIEF: From Fear to Freedom by Kalliope Barlis is about Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) which is designed to manipulate the thinking process of the brain to make it better. Kalliope Barlis, who had apprenticed with Dr. Bandler (cofounder and established practitioner of NLP) and a practitioner for years, explains how it is used to fight off phobias in a matter of hours or even minutes. The book is divided into three different parts. The first part concentrates on the concept of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and differentiates irrational phobias from fears that are vital to life. It also explains why you need to rid yourself of phobias. The second part details the practical steps you can follow to deal with phobias. These practical exercises are explained to you in such a way that you can apply them and defeat your phobias without having to visit an NLP practitioner in person. In the third part of the book, the author provides a transcript of a live session with a real patient; practically demonstrating how the exercises that were earlier given had been used to help someone overcome a phobia.
The book is written in simple language devoid of unnecessary complex words and sentences. The practicals are simple and easy to follow, and they are written in the order in which they are to be followed. Any jargon used is explained so that the reader doesn't get lost. I also like the lack of profanity in the whole book. The author also did well to explain clearly the little-known concept of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, so even though I am coming across it for the very first time, I did not find it hard to understand. I am confident that you will also find it easy to comprehend. At the end of the book, there is an appendix with the exercises for rote practice when you are done reading it, so you do not have to be checking through the chapters to find and practice an exercise. References used are also clearly outlined at the end of the book.
Honestly, the book is well-written. There is little or nothing to suggest to make it better. However, I think for a book that involves practicals, diagrams and images would have been an added advantage, even though they are unnecessary due to the simple nature of the exercises, their absence does not affect the book in any way.
This book was professionally edited, therefore, I would rate the book 5 out of 5 stars because I found only a few errors.
I would recommend this book to you if you are suffering from one form of phobia or another especially if it causes discomfort or embarrassment to you and you wish to be free to do what others are doing without any problem. There is no profanity or complex jargon so there is no age or professional restriction for the readers. In addition, all those who wish to have better control of their pattern of thought and achieve more in life can explore the Neuro-Linguistic Programming information contained in the book to make their lives better.
