Review of Murder in the Garbage
Murder in the garbage
A crime novel written by Jerry A. Greenberg is a good read, the book is set around nefarious activities in which a waste management facility plays a prominent part thus the title. Two of the active characters involved in the investigations are from military backgrounds thus departing from the traditional detective-led investigations one has grown to expect.
The investigative quality does not suffer however as the FBI and the CIA play a prominent part as the plot thickens. One of the main character upon leaving the military set out to find a job that would facilitate him working by day and allows him time at night to attend school to start his college education.
For a while, he became a shooting instructor at a local range thus preparing him for the dangerous tasks ahead. A friend suggest taking a garbage collector job, as it would afford him the opportunity to work during the day and attend class at night. Convinced it was a good suggestion, he applied for a job at a waste management company, he was called in for an interview, impressed the manager, and landed the job.
The next character introduced is a recently resigned navy officer, during his service he participated in several life-and-death situations, which were the mitigating circumstances that hastened his resignation. It wasn’t long after he applied to the CIA for a job and was successful. His first assignment was to infiltrate and bring down a crime syndicate that was the main player in the theft of a quantity of some of the newest and most sophisticated missiles.
The investigation unearths leads that the waste management company was intimately involved in the transportation of the contraband. As the novel progresses, the manager of the garage company was found stuffed in a large garbage bag which was then tucked into a trash container ready for disposal. It was found in the said community he lives.
Arriving early for work a worker Manton ran into some nefarious activities being carried out, the perpetrators beat him to near death, he was only rescued when a patrol unit that happens to be passing by heard the commotion and stopped to investigate. The local detective was involved in the scheme.
The book narrates shoot, threats, and assaults but in the end, the CIA, FBI, and local police recovered the missiles. The investigations reveal that the diseased wife, a worker, and other collaborators were involved in the murder.
An action-packed crime novel, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars and 4 out of 5. I believe the authors did good intensive investigations in the case, highlighting the many twists and turns thereof, and narrating bumps that always dog all good investigations like a threat to witness, assaults, and the propensity for corruption. I recommend this book to admirers of a good crime novel, or anyone who find delight in reading a novel that does not make too much demand on time.
