Review of Terms of Service
Craig W. Stanfill’s Terms of Service takes the reader along on a young lady’s journey as she tries her best to survive in a world where Artificial Intelligence (AI) run things. She goes through her life determined not to break any rules as she routinely abides by the Terms of Service provided in her world. All is well until her best friend and companion comes along, and their encounter leads to a number of experiences which makes them realize certain truths about themselves and the world they live in. As the main character tries to move out of the grips of The Company which sought to take control over her, she loses everything and ends up in exile with only “the freedom to think for herself and a tiny sliver of hope”.
The author does a great job of using a lot of imagery through the book. The world, environment, communities, homes and even people are described with so much detail that one is able to have mental pictures of what the author wishes to present to his readers. This is really good especially for people who do not have much knowledge about Artificial Intelligence. As the story unfolds, the reader is captured into the world of the characters and the details even help one to feel what the characters also feel, sometimes. I particularly love the fact that explicitness of the sexual scenes is just enough so as not to reveal so much and also not to take the readers mind away from what is actually happening. the progression of the story is also very great and readers are given a good climax and anti-climax of the entire story. The teaser on the sequel to this book also whets one’s appetite for what is to come.
Although the writer uses a lot of descriptions and detailedness, it sometimes takes the reader away from the story itself as much time is spent trying to picture the environment being described. The Note on Translation revealed that she/her/hers will run through the book, but reading the book from the beginning provides one with the sense that the AI world is filled with mostly females exist. It is not until one gets to the latter part of the book that one realizes that the other gender also exists in that world. I think that in spite of the translation, the other pronouns could have also been used so readers could better appreciate that the world within the book is quite similar to the real world. one grammatical error I noticed from the book is from page 153: “Kim’ virtual body” instead of “Kim’s virtual body”.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars mainly because it is different what other novels seen around. The plot, setting and characters are all unique and the writer is really creative to make his characters come alive even though their world is different from what we are accustomed to. There are lessons to be learnt from the book and as subtle as they might be, Craig has done a great job in telling his readers to be confident and never lose hope no matter the circumstances they might be facing.
Terms of Service – Subject to Change Without Notice is an interesting book that inspires hope, and confidence in an individual. Although the book is open to have an adult audience, I believe that female readers would easily be able to relate with the book, especially with the main character being female; and this could even help them boost their confidence levels, especially in a world that seems to not empower women enough. All in all, Terms of Service makes an interesting read for anyone looking to relax with a good book.
