Twisted but True by Darren Burch

He never dreamed such an impact would be made on his life by an incident in 1979. He and his friends were coming home from a party when they approached a slow-moving vehicle driven by an elderly gentleman and his presumed wife. Fast approaching was a Javelin driven by an angry gentleman. As he was passing on the right, he hit gravel and overcompensated as he came back onto the road. Spinning out of control, he slammed into an electrical pole, causing the transformer to explode and igniting a small fire near the trunk of the Javelin.

Stopping to help, Burch and his friends did their best. After numerous futile attempts to save the girl trapped in the burning car, his friends had to pull him away lest he, too, should perish. Burch became preoccupied with saving lives as he stood by watching helplessly-his heart broken for the life he couldn't save.

After what Burch thought was absent behavior on the part of the Sheriff and Medical departments on the case, and his rescue attempt of being first on the scene, thereby implanted the seed in the malleable mind of a teenager to one day become a police officer.

Twisted but True is the accumulation of cases covering three decades experienced by Darren Burch as a patrolman, sex crime detective, and an almost CIA agent. Working as an Administrative Sergeant at an advocacy center in the investigative bureau, he worked with neglected, abused, and molested children and for women and men of sexual assault.

Going back to work in The Night Detective Homicide Unit, Burch investigated suicides, accidental deaths, and murder cases with known suspects known as non-complex homicides. While his counterparts, The Daytime Detectives, worked on more complicated instances in which the subject was unknown, and it would take months or years to solve those cases.

He had some close calls, had been shot at, chased bank robbers, and dealt with unsavory people. He is now working at a radio station called "The 5-0 Info Radio Show," reiterating cases from his Twisted but True series. He is the director of a crime stoppers program called "Silent Witness," working with the media and the community to help solve felony crimes.

Growing up around police officers, I am intrigued to hear all the different cases police officers investigate and all the different scenarios people manage to get themselves. The positive thing about Twisted but True is that they are true stories about real men and women who go out daily, putting their lives on the line so we can be safe in our homes. The negative thing about Twisted but True is, like the title says, "Twisted…but true." Many of the cases Burch cites in his first of three books ("Filling in the Cracks" and "Plugging up the Holes") demonstrate just how uncertain an officer's day can go, not knowing if they will make it home to loved ones.

My favorite case is Chapter Eight, called "Chasing Mad Cow" (page 52). Burch paints a vivid picture, making you feel you're sitting on the sidelines as it unfolds before your eyes. But, then again, Chapter 6, "A Bad Place for a Cramp" (page 43), is too funny for words. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Rating Twisted but True on a scale of one out of five stars, I give this book four out of five stars. The cases are fascinating. If you like crime stories, this book is a: get a cup of coffee (or a glass of wine), put on your fuzzy slippers and your robe, sit in your big fluffy chair with mellow music in the background, and you're in for a nice ride. I did not give it five stars because I don't necessarily think it is amazing, and it's a little gory for my liking. I'm the one who always hides behind her spread-apart fingers. :- I did not give it three stars, for it was well above average.

I recommend Twisted but True by Darren Burch for a mature audience. This book is not for the faint of heart. It does have profanity and is sexually explicit in places. If you like watching crime shows about the dumbest criminals and wildest police videos, etc., this book will delight you. As I said, I rather enjoyed it, and if my dad were alive, I would give him a copy, and I'm sure he would enjoy it, too!
