First few chapters of Inspector Mage ; well written, descriptive introduction to first character, mysterious, makes you want to keep reading as there are terms not heard of e.g ‘mage gift’.

Page 13 - ‘spilled’?

Chapter 2, introduces gems and special gifts and lays a foundation for the rest of the book.

Can be difficult to get your head around a new concept, a fantasy land but Hughes has effectively done this.

Page 35 - startled?

A sense of murder mystery in the manor which is a bit cliche

Page 50 .calloused

Majority of chapters from Julie’s POV, enjoyed the POV from Russell’s, would have been nice to see more of that
Felt quite predictable as a story but the way it was written kept me interested, the descriptions really helped to envision the settings.

In conclusion, it was an enjoyable read, very well written. The storyline itself just felt predictable. I would recommend and would like to see more from Hughes. I would give the book 3 out of 5.
