Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is a fantasy/sci-fi novel by Matthew Tysz. It is the first part of the nine Voulhire's series. This part of the series introduces the reader to the protagonist's escape from the Land of the Princes to the Kingdom of Voulhire.
After the king of the Land of the Princes succeeded in making his four son's enemies, Life turned to hell for the people of the earth because they had few options. They had to decide whether to die by a slow famine or die by the sword of the princes. After Galen successfully utilized his opportunity in escaping from the Land of the Princes, where most of the citizens suffered because of the power struggle in the royal family, he journeyed to a small town called Magnum Caelum in Voulhire. On getting to Voulhire, Galen learns about his uncle's death. His uncle left him a forge and a self-written manual on Blacksmithing. Little did Galen know that he has a great part to play as regards the fate of Voulhire.
The first thing I'll point out that I like about this book is the storyline. I enjoy the story starting from the first page of the book where Tysz introduces the reader to the Land of the Princes. Apart from having a beautiful plot, the book is filled with twists and turns that can keep a reader engaged in the story. The transition between the first and third-person perspectives is also top-notch.
There are some minor things I dislike about this book. One of these things is character development. Maybe it is because this book is a series; the slow development of the characters makes the story seem draggy at some point. Also, I don't like dealing with a large number of characters, but it's understandable. I won't say some characters are redundant since this is just the first part of the series.
I did not find any errors in this book; this implies that it was professionally edited. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I did not deduct any stars because those things I mentioned that I disliked in this book are not really faults; they are just things that could have increased my interest in this book.
It is to be noted that this book contains a number of profane terms. It also contains some violent and gory scenes. So I won't recommend this book to sensitive readers and the faint-hearted. Mature readers who find joy in reading adventurous fantasies will enjoy this book.
