Review of A Dream For Peace
Fighting for freedom is not an easy task. To accomplish such a feat, one must have complete dedication and self-determination.
A Dream For Peace is a memoir by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah about the challenges he and other freedom fighters faced during the colonial era. The author was born in Ain Beida, a small town in the province of Constantine in Algeria. His father, Hamadi Berrah, was a proud Saighi tribesman who enjoyed hunting and was well-known for his tenacity and courage. He spoke about his early life and extended family in Ain Beida. He also described how their teachers made them learn the French language and history as if France were their motherland. He told the story of the first time he was racially abused in a class by his teacher. The author graduated from high school with honors and received a full scholarship to study in any part of the world. He went to France for his university education and studied medicine. In France, he discovered the zeal to combat racism and discrimination against Algerians and other people from colonized countries. He also wrote about the difficulties and challenges he and his comrades faced while attempting to gain freedom.
This book taught me a lot. The author wrote extensively about African culture and history, particularly Algerian culture and history. He educated readers on how colonizers were so intent on eradicating African culture. He also discussed many African revolutionaries and their fight for political consciousness and independence. The author included photographs of events and locations that he spoke about in the book. These images helped me understand the writer's story much better and brought me up to speed on the atmosphere he was attempting to create while writing this memoir.
There was nothing about this book that I didn't like. The author's determination to achieve peace and freedom piqued my interest in this book. He had a zeal to fight for what he wanted from his childhood, which was what I liked best about his character. For instance, when he decided to pursue his dreams of becoming a doctor while defying his stepbrother's decision to become a teacher. The author, in my opinion, is more than a doctor; he is a revolutionary ambassador, patriot, and politician. One of the author's many good qualities that readers could emulate was his patriotic nature.
I would give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars because it was exceptionally well-edited and thoroughly written. People who enjoy reading about historical events and memoirs will definitely like this book.
