Review of Musings of an old American during the Pandemic
I would rate the book Musings of an old American during the Pandemic by author John Martin Ramsey a total of 3 stars out of 4
This book is based on a podcast that the author has been doing for the two years during the pandemic. Each podcast is summarized in brief chapters that include links to his podcast, photos, and other clickable links allowing the reader to dive even further into his material. Each chapter is numbered with the title of his podcast and gives a brief description of what was discussed during the podcast or what enlightening thoughts he has about the specific topic at hand. Topics in the book range from religion to sports, general thoughts about world problems to general thoughts about life in general.
I really liked the layout of the book. It made it a quick read without going into too much detail of each podcast. I like how the author included the link to each podcast though, in case I was really intrigued and wanted to hear more about what was discussed. I also liked the wide range of topics that the author chose to discuss. I found his opinions very enlightening and I feel like he really did give new perspectives on how we think.
I did not particularly like some of the ways in which he repeated stories. At the beginning of the book it seemed like he did this more than later on in his story. He would often discuss the podcast in summary in the next podcast and to me, I felt like that was unnecessary. I understand the point of reference, but this didn't quite seem like that was the case.
I gave this book the rating I did because it was an easy read and it was enjoyable. The author's main point of the book was to give us new perspectives on certain topics and I felt like he accomplished this. I know there were topics that I thought differently about after reading this book than what I had previously thought.
I would say this book is good for college students or anyone older. It is never too late to change your opinion about something, even late in life which is why I feel like someone older might benefit from it. I feel like college students could also benefit from reading this book because a lot of their opinions are already formed by this age. College is a time to interrupt our life's thoughts and opinions and often change our previous ways of thinking. This book would be a great edition to a philosophy class.
