Review of Backcomb & Tattoo
Backcomb and Tattoo by Shea R Embry is a heartwarming story of women and the bonds of friendship. Through happenstance, the lives of four very different women are brought together. With the mysterious Aunt Mary Opal at the heart of their new foursome, secrets bleed into the group. As these hidden bits of information are revealed, it becomes clear that not all secrets are born of malice. The four friends learn more about one another and become closer than ever before as each experiences major changes in their lives.
Rachael leads an amazing life with her talented rock star husband. Everything looks perfect, but is it? While balancing her mother’s illness and thoughts that her marriage may be in jeopardy, she meets the amazing Aunt Mary Opal. This meeting launches Rachael into a new life of self-awareness and a much needed sense of belonging. Aunt Mary Opal has led a long and eventful life. Feeling her time on earth may come to an end sooner rather than later, she makes the brave decision to live a life of fun. Harboring loads of secrets and fantastical stories, fate helps her form a group of incredible women to share everything with. Joined by the adventurous Jesi and the quiet Nicole, their “ladies light luncheons” and accidental group meditations reveal answers and new mysteries in equal measure.
I truly enjoyed this book. The character development was alluring and the point of view changes kept me hooked. I was very impressed with the inclusion of certain topics that some authors tend to avoid. If LGBTQIA+ matters, domestic abuse, death with dignity, or spirituality aren’t your cup of tea, then this is not the book for you. Personally, I found each characters’ storyline to be refreshing and intriguing.
I’m hard-pressed to come up with anything I didn’t like about this book. I found very few grammatical errors and, while the writing could be slow at times, the overall story kept me turning pages. I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. It was so great to read such well thought-out characters with relatable, yet enticing, backgrounds. With indications that this may not be all for this group of characters, I look forward to exploring more from Shea R Embry.
This is the woman-centered book you’ve been looking for. The unique perspectives of varying aged characters made reading this book feel like spending time with family. Even sensitive topics, such as spirituality, flowed well with the storyline and felt natural within the pages. If you have experienced or are facing major changes in your life, Rachael, Aunt Mary Opal, Jesi, and Nicole are the perfect friends to help guide you.
