Everyone needs a vacation, even the Grim Reaper. The only issue being that he needs to find an intern to take over while he is away, and who better for the job than a hitman? Enter Buck Palasinksia, a former military soldier turned contract killer. After a failed assassination mission, he wakes up to find that the bullet previously lodged between his eyes is now missing, and he is as alive as ever. After proving himself worthy to Death, Buck is put on his new mission of killing those who have evaded death. What Buck did not expect from working for Death was the whirlwind of supernatural predicaments he would find himself in. Caught in the middle of a war between two supernatural power heads, he needs to complete his mission without causing a disruption in the paranormal world.

Dead-End Job is an action comedy filled with entertainment from the first page to the last. The quick wit humour throughout the novel creates an atmosphere pertaining more to the humour of the story rather than the gore. Justin Alcala does a fantastic job at giving the story a life of its own through the somewhat realistic challenges that Buck faces. Although this novel action-packed and gory, the light-hearted undertone leads readers to sympathise with the characters. The suspense and intrigue given from this story pulls you into his world and leave you eagerly awaiting the next book.

Aside from a few errors and scenes that are drawn out, there is not much to dislike about the book. It offers a great plot and likable character, all that is needed is an edit.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The twists and turns throughout the book keep you invested in the plot and how it all unfolds. The writing was descriptive and kept you in the loop while also questioning the motives of every character. I was fascinated with the depictions of all the ghoulish characters and the politics that the author created around them. All these wonderful elements of storytelling add up to a fantastic book. The only thing that is keeping it from a full rating for me is the grammatical errors that could have been edited properly.

This is an action thriller with just the right amount of wry humour that fans of Dead Pool would enjoy. I recommend this book to teens and adults alike seeking a gory yet hilarious supernatural adventure.
