Review of A Dream For Peace
A dream for peace by Dr Ghoulem Berrah is a sagacious memoir pondering on the life of a global peace ambassador, Dr Ghoulem Berrah. This memoir sufficiently describes the person of Dr Ghoulem; his perspective of colonial and post colonial Africa; the struggles for freedom; his participation in attempts to promote peace in the world at large.
Dr Ghoulem describes how Algeria was during those periods under the French rule; how the colonists tried to suppress the culture and history of the native Algerians; how even as a school boy he had to deal with racism from his teachers, and got punished when he took a stand against it. Dr Ghoulem thus grew up with the desire for freedom. He participated actively in the struggle to achieve freedom and stop the abuses of Algerian students while studying in France. It was during the struggle that he met a beautiful young woman from Côte d'Ivoire, Antoinette. The two would soon find themselves behind Spanish bars. Upon their release in a prisoner swap deal, Dr Ghoulem joined the Moroccan Liberation Army–a resistance against Spanish occupation. Dr Ghoulem later went on to become an established man of science and academia in the United States. But with a young Africa in need of its best heads, Dr Ghoulem returned to Africa. He served as an adviser to the foreign ministry of Côte d'Ivoire and was also a close ally of the Ivorian president. He also participated in the initiation of the first dialogue between the warring parties in the Israel and Palestine feud.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It exposes a lot about some key events in the past. It was generally an enlightening piece. My favorite part of the story was the 'Birth to University' chapter. I particularly liked where a young school boy, Ghoulem, responded 'This is a French deed' to his teacher's racist assertion. The whole scene painted a picture of what they had gone through during those times and the courageous personality of Dr Ghoulem even at a tender age.
His brilliant idea to prevent a major diplomatic incident by cutting off Fidel Castro's microphone feed to everyone's headphone really made me laugh.
Overall, there was absolutely nothing to dislike about this book. It was well detailed and educational. I also did not notice any grammatical errors, typos or spelling errors. This book was professionally well edited. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was very easy to give it the maximum rating because, as stated earlier, it makes for an astute memoir in both structure and content.
I recommend this book to people who love to read memoirs, biography and history books. It is equally suitable for anyone who wants to know more about Africa and its struggle for freedom. It is suitable for people of all age groups.
