Review of Adrift
Charlie Sheldon's second instalment in the Strong Heart Series, Adrift, is an astounding tale of adventure that will seize any reader's attention right from its very first page.
Steve Procida, Captain of the Seattle Express, is awoken by the jarring sound of a ship's fire alarm, one of the worst things to happen to a sailor at sea. Stuck in the middle of a storm as the fire turns untamable, they have no choice but to abandon ship. Filled with panic and a healthy dose of fear, the crew climb into two separate lifeboats and almost immediately lose contact and sight of each other as soon as they launch their boats. With one boat experiencing engine failure, and the brutal conditions of December's winter, there is little chance of survival.
Meanwhile, on land, Larry and Louise intercept the Buckhorn Industries' messages about the abandoned ship. Like mana from heaven, these messages come as a miraculous and lifesaving surprise as their tugboat business is about to go under. Now Larry and Louise's boat, Warhorse, must race against the competition in order to seize the ship before Buckhorn's tug can.
This is nothing short of a masterpiece. The author wields the element of suspense and drama with full authority, expertly controlling readers' attention and emotions. The character development was nothing to sneeze at, and added an extra mark of excellence to this book. Charlie infused a piece of mystery into this book: the cause of the ship's fire. This felt like an excellent way to draw readers in and get them hooked on the next instalment in the series. The book had three different plots, each coming together at the end with what felt like a seamless combination of each individual storyline. This is something that mostly fantasy plots can boast of, and it was a wonderful element to add. What was even more amazing was the overall authenticity of the book. Not one feature or fact felt fake. Charlie Sheldon really outdid himself with this one.
There really was nothing to hate about this book. This book's outstanding plot, error-free dialogue, suspenseful nature, authentic feel, the seamless shift between plots, and the epic conclusion all compels me to give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. This was a well-edited book.
This exciting thriller is filled with enough suspense and authentic details to make any reader fall in love with its content. But I will have to recommend this book for readers who love books that are filled with jaw-dropping twists, attention-grabbing content, and a little dose of mystery.
