Review of Bed of Rose and Thorns
The Bed of Rose and Thorns is an action-packed adventure about one warrior’s quest to find his true love and, in doing so, find himself. This story is set in a supernatural world where creatures of the night roam free. Ezra must navigate this dangerous world so he may reunite with his beloved Queen.
The Bed of Rose and Thorns, written by Lee Hunt, started strong and introduced the main character as a powerful warrior who is loyal and relentless in his pursuit of the Queen. However, Ezra’s continuous rambling about his love and devotion for the Queen made the book boring and dull. Ezra’s entire personality is built on his desire for the Queen, and even his journey of self-discovery is influenced by her. This makes Ezra seem as if he has no real autonomy and makes him unlikable as a lead character. Ezra’s feelings for the Queen seem to lack substance, as it seems he has had very little time with her and spends most of his journey trying to get to her. The Queen can only be described as bland, as she does not possess any definitive characteristics. This made me dislike Ezra even more because I did not understand his obsession with the Queen.
Lee Hunt delivers some action scenes that are fun to read, but I was left disappointed. I expected more action, especially considering the book is about a highly skilled and powerful warrior. The world-building was also sorely lacking, and I did not feel transported into Ezra’s world. The story featured a female knight as a supporting character, which was unique and exciting, but her personality was disappointing. She is written to be strong, as any knight should be, but I found myself wishing she had more elements to her character other than just being a strong female knight. Lee Hunt focused too much on Ezra’s fixation with the Queen and not enough on other elements that could have elevated the story.
The Bed of Rose and Thorns is well-written, exceptionally edited, and features plenty of romantic and poetic phrases. I enjoy poetry, so I enjoyed reading the poetic passages and the metaphors in the book. I must commend Lee Hunt for including female representation in the book. The use of female knights instead of male knights was unique and unexpected.
I am a lover of high fantasy books, and I was excited to read Bed of Rose and Thorns, but I was unfortunately left unsatisfied. I think the negatives I have listed above far outweigh the positives, and for that reason, I am rating this book 2 out of 4 stars.
I would not recommend this book to anyone looking for a high fantasy book with good world-building and complex characters. However, if you are just starting to get into high fantasy, then perhaps this book may be a good starting point as it is not complex or highly descriptive, which may be ideal for new high fantasy readers.
