Fill the Gaps by Andrew Johnston follows Isaac, a university dropout who just seems to have given up. The book is about how Isaac is struggling with how his life turned out to be, as he had high hopes for himself, and always thought that he deserved better, yet was not working hard to get what he wanted. He’s a complex character, ignorant of his rude attitude and how he treats his friends who seem to struggle with life too and with Isaac’s attitude.

You get to understand a lot of what’s going on with other characters and how Isaac’s attitude is by analyzing the dialogues and their actions. Perhaps that’s why the book is called Fill the Gaps.
Throughout the book, you get to see the complexity of a character. We all know someone like Isaac, or we have acted like him at some point in our lives. His frustration with his dreams and hopes is obvious in everything he does. Feeling that connection to a character isn’t an easy job, and Andrew Johnston did a wonderful job at it.

The story was written from only Isaac's point of view. Yet, I was able to understand how the other characters are and what’s going on in their lives. And that was one of the things I liked about the book.
His two roommates are also struggling with their expectations of the future and how they are trying to help each other deal with Isaac’s behavior.

But, you expect the story to have an arc or more of a development. As you go through the book, you move from sympathizing with Isaac to just being sick of him. You relate more to his friends and the people who have to put up with his attitude.

The book had some positive aspects, but to me, the negatives were more. That’s why I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. I didn’t like it much, but I think others might.

I think the book would be more suitable for people who are interested in reading about complex characters, fine drama, and knowing more about human behavior. It won’t satisfy readers who are looking for major character development or slow-paced events. A lot is going on in the book, and there are a few characters who we follow closely. That’s why it might not be suitable for people looking for a quick light read.
