Review of Sandcastles
Sandcastles by Janet Stegman takes you on a journey of her life. This journey is a rounded circle of which addictions she battled in her life such as overeating, sex and love. How she discovered what led her to those addictions, along with how she discovered why she had the addiction in the first place. Finally, the book includes methods she found worked for dealing with her addictions and what she found did not work. Some examples of these methods are tapping, talking to your inner child, 12 step programs, dieting, journaling, and muscle testing. However, you will need to read the book to find out how each method works and rather Janet found them helpful or not.
Some positive aspects of this book are that you can really feel the author wants you to deeply open yourself up and do the activities. The author spends a lot of time explaining what she has personally gone through. Such as her addiction with overeating and how it made her drop out of college. Another example is how she realized her negative body image is partly her dad’s fault because she always told her what he liked sexual and how to act with men. Which as a reader will make you more willing to try the methods and search for the real meaning behind your own addictions. The number one point of the book is so that you realize you are never alone, and someone is always there if you just ask for help.
Although this book has many positives there are negatives in the book as well. At times the author takes you on so much of her own personal journey, that it is hard to refocus and remember you are reading the book to help yourself. The next negative aspect of this book is that many of the methods taught in this book are for the most part not individual methods but rather you need others with you in that moment to practice or help you.
I would rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. I would not recommend this book for people who are just starting to battle their addictions. As this book contains methods that could help addictions but focuses more on the person journey of one individual. Another reason I would not recommend it to individuals who are just starting to battle addictions is because in my experience battling your addictions requires knowing why you have those cravings in the first place. This book does not contain helpful information on exploring why you feel the need for the addiction. I would recommend this book for people who have already started exploring their addiction and healing process, as a way to explore new coping mechanisms.
