Review of Zona: The Forbidden Land
A failed expedition by Randall Veruschka, a renowned researcher, into the Northern Siberia. His target was Zona: The Forbidden Land. A promise of exotic plants and animals. A once in a lifetime adventure.
Grant Taylor arrived Russia after his uncle Randall Veruschka, went missing for a year. This led the government to declare him officially dead. Grant took on the responsibility of been Randall's heir, and he inherited all his properties including his apartment, which holds many secrets . He met dazzling Irina, his uncle's best friend Mr Boris, and some other interesting characters.
After series of suspicious activities and findings, Grant decides to go on a second expedition, with the primary purpose of finding his uncle Randall. The second expedition group included some characters worthy of note. They are Zolkov Max, who is the sole survivor of the first expedition and leader of the second expedition, Irina, Lada, Tamara, Igor and others.
Grant Taylor discovered some interesting things before going on the expedition. He found his uncle's old journal, but he couldn't find the most recent one. He was approached by a mysterious man, named Guldonov who gave him the last journal. He also found some letters his uncle kept for him. Randall had left the letters in a safe deposit for safekeeping with a strict warning for Grant. Grant Taylor investigated into the failed expedition using the internet, through the help of a young lady, Anya.
This book has unexpected twists and turns. It portrays betrayal, a level of romance and erotica, and team work. The style of writing is easy to follow. Fred G. Baker took great care in providing the back story, and allowing the reader understand our main character beforehand. The story was told in Grant Taylor's point of view.
The story shows how easily people's greed for power can manifest and completely change who they are. During the course of the story, one could see how been emotionally involved with someone doesn't mean you trust them. The level of loyalty and discipline portrayed is one to be emulated. Some lives were lost during their travels, and they all had to deal with the loss in their own way, this is particularly nice to read. Also it shows how different people can be once they are no longer bound by societal rules.
I don't have any objections with the book except for few things. For one, the story itself has some glitches. It has some loose ends, and lack of closure for some events in the story. Due to its slow start, one can get discouraged in finishing up the book. But it is generally a good read .
I'll rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. This rating is based on the imaginative capacity of the author. The book was professionally edited.
I'll like to recommend this book to people who love adventure stories. Zoologists, botanists and other scientists will enjoy reading this book. People who have a hard time with team work should pick this book up, because it tells the importance of teamwork. Leaders and heads of groups, teams and communities, will learn one or two things from this book. Also I'll like to recommend to fans of romance and erotica.
