Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream for Peace is a non-fiction book written by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah narrating his personal experience and the history of the African dream to achieve independence, development, and peace in every country. The story is told in a first-person account. The book is centered on the ideology of liberating African countries from colonial oppression and achieving independence, peace, and equality for all.
The author was born and raised in Algeria. As a teenager, he was fascinated by science rather than politics. He grew up to be a very talented young man with ambitions of achieving world peace, harmony, and development for all humans. This dream cannot be easily realized while they are living under the control of French colonizers who are doing everything in their power to remove the native language of Algerians from schools in an effort to erase their history. At the same time, Dr. Berrah takes the reader into his experience and the struggles he endured at a young age, such as the passing away of his father. He was introduced to the Querela War of the Liberation Army of Algeria and, afterward, he was captured and imprisoned. He endured horrible, inhuman treatment while in prison. Fortunately, he escaped from prison and went abroad. The experience strengthened his determination to continue studying, in which he excelled academically and obtained a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in science. The question is, how will his academic skills and life experience assist him to attain his lifelong dream? He needs influence and political power to unite for a common goal of achieving peace, equality, harmony, and independence. Who will be his confidantes in a world marred by corruption, insecurity, and inequality? Who can he trust when betrayals and self-serving are the norms? This story reflects the many twists, troubles, and challenges the author went through in life as an advocate for world peace.
I like this story because it portrays the reality of life, which I can relate to. I am catapulted into his encounters, imagination, and ideology behind the force that propelled him to narrate this book. I felt both happy and sad at times while reading. I found myself consumed with the good and bad things that the author has to go through, but also, it brought a glimmer of hope that we all need to stand fast to achieve our goals, despite the uphill battle we are faced with. This book provided me with an understanding of what Dr. Kwame Nkuruma advocated for, as well as the inspiration to see all people living in peace and harmony.
After I read this book, I did not find anything distasteful. The story is well-aligned, educative, and easy to read without losing focus.
I did not encounter errors or anything negative in this book. I personally like the story. It’s well-articulated and professionally edited. The author’s attention to detail invokes the reader’s imagination. I rate this book four stars out of four.
The book is recommended for non-fiction readers. This book is infused with drama and real people's life experiences. I think it will be an asset and an eye-opener to people who are fond of African history, especially Algeria and Côte d'Ivoire. There is no sexual content or gore incident detailed in this book.
