Reconfigurement: Reconfiguring Your Life at Any Stage and Planning Ahead by E. Alan Fleischauer is a non-fiction financial planning and financial literacy book that helps the reader to reframe their mindset about retirement planning. Inside the book, Mr. Fleischauer covers diverse ways to save money for retirement, the multiple ways to invest your money, and how to navigate the minefield that is health and life insurance. The recurring theme of “planning ahead” is supported by in depth research and resources to help set realistic goals. The book also supplies resource links to webpages that can provide more information on career planning and state specific tax information. The style of the writing is kept lighthearted, despite being a dry and serious topic.

Reconfigurement: Reconfiguring Your Life at Any Stage and Planning Ahead covers many different topics in a short amount of time, but it is information that I have never given a second thought to. I liked how the author would breakdown the more complex topics into simpler lay terms. There were also graphs and images that helped to visualize the points that he was trying to make. It was helpful to read about difficult topics, such as sudden death, and learning how to set up a financial plan to ensure that surviving family members are protected.

On the negative side, the style of the writing took awhile to get used to. Reconfigurement: Reconfiguring Your Life at Any Stage and Planning Ahead is written as if it were a transcript of a financial seminar. The author would also go on off-topic tangents to relate to the reader, but for me, it made me lose my train of thought.

I give Reconfigurement: Reconfiguring Your Life at Any Stage and Planning Ahead a solid 3 out of 4 stars. Financial literacy and retirement planning are two aspects of life that a large amount of people are clueless about. In many of the chapters there are honest discussions about being flexible to adjusting goals to match earning potential. This type of honesty is tough to accept. The author has professional experience helping people plan ahead for their retirement years and backs up this information with reliable research citations.

I recommend Reconfigurement: Reconfiguring Your Life at Any Stage and Planning Ahead for those who may be just starting off in their career field all the way to those close to retirement. In my opinion, it is never too early to know what your options are. Retirement, death, and health issues are not always comfortable topics, but they are a reality of life that we all will face.
