Review of A Dream For Peace
A Dream for Peace by Dr Ghoulem Berrah is a memoir that provides a narrative of the author’s life experiences, especially the pivotal moments in his life. It spans his life from bits and pieces of his childhood, his educational pursuits, his freedom-fighting efforts and his political career, as well as other bits of his personal life.
Mr Berrah was a distinguished student making valid research contributions that changed science. As a student in France, he became a freedom fighter for his country, Algeria, who faced arrest in the course of his freedom fighting pursuits. He agreed to serve in various capacities for the Cote D’Ivoirian President, tackled various political issues on behalf of and alongside the President, and became one of the President’s most trusted persons. He also chronicles his love life, its ups and downs, and a beautiful long-lasting love story of an interfaith marriage between himself, a Muslim, and his Catholic wife. Themes of politics, the pressing need for World Peace and Liberation, the absolute possibility of interfaith without conflict, devotion to one’s religion with acceptance of the religions of others, love and its enduring quality are seen in this complex but beautiful memoir.
I liked that the book dealt with a lot of complex themes and chronicled important narrative events of the freedom fighting movement in African countries without it being overwhelmingly sad or depressing. I liked the author’s way of framing a lot of events, even adverse, from an optimistic viewpoint. I also liked, and this is personal, the author’s reference to his wife as my Love throughout the book. I found it emotive. It touched my soul. His apparent fondness for the people in his life was quite obvious in the manner he wrote. It was also exceptionally well-edited.
I do wonder, however, if it’s the case that, like a lot of political writers, he tends to paint political events in a way that makes him and his contemporaries appear in the best light. I wonder if certain recounting of events is the actual truth or just a whitewashed version. I found reading this book quite tiresome at times, but that may not be the book’s fault. It is a book dealing with complex themes and this is reflected in the complexity of the language used. Those are the only issues I have with this book.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars . This book is incredibly complex in my opinion. It’s not an easy read, but if you can stick with it, it’s worth it. I recommend this book to lovers of political intrigues, and memoirs. This book has religious themes but I do think it's suited to people of all religions.
