Review of Scandal, Heartbreak and Deceit: One Woman's Experience with Online Dating
Love, true companionship, and happy marriage with someone we really trust are the fundamental goals of human society. However in search for those goals, many times we may end up falling in wrong hands and that’s the main point in the book; "Scandal, Heartbreak and Deceit: One Woman's Experience with Online Dating", by Elizabeth Mahoney. In fact, this is a tale about peoples search for intimacy in wrong places.
After divorce, frustrated with her 28year marriage where her husband was so unfaithful, having multiple affairs with other women, and in order to cover his guilt, went a step ahead and requested for an open marriage, the writer, in search for companionship, tries online dating where she ends up being a victim of online scam which coasts her over $12,500 and this was followed by a failed romance in which she later realized she was just being used as a sex object without genuine romantic attraction.
The writer explains how online dating sights and apps makes it easy for scammers and sexual exploiters to achieve their goals. In fact, as you read the book, you will be shocked at the magnitude of scandals that exist on well-known dating sights. Needless to say, but if you are thinking about online dating as an option in search for love, companionship and genuine friendship, you will be forced to rethink your approach or at least be more vigilant as you navigate through those sights.
In a world where so many people are addicted to pornography, thinking it will help them improve their sexual ability, this book will help so many readers to really understand the link between pornography and sexual performance problems, relationship hardships and sexual dissatisfaction as it reduces brain activation to sexual stimuli. She also writes about the extent of human trafficking and how it has led to great sexual exploitation, untold suffering and death in some cases and all this supported with a lot of statistical data and heart rending real life experiences.
The book was written in a way that it’s possible to skip reading what you’re not interested in and you read only what interests you, for example those who might not be interested in statistics can easily skip it as you can see where it starts from and ends in the section where it is used.
I loved the authors’ honesty when writing about her marriage life with her ex-husband, how a scammer stole her money even if it might be embarrassing to let the story out but she didn’t fear to be labelled or blamed for allowing to be deceived. Her dealings with Grant, what attracted her to him and how it all ended. It seemed like she wrote all her troubled heart. This kind of writing, reaches honest readers’ hearts and really moves them to action.
Because of the extensive work which the writer presented, well researched material about each and every topic discussed, I rate the book 4 out of 4. The book was well edited, no grammatical errors found, save for the reported speeches with Shepard and others, this can’t affect quality. Overall, the book is very educative. It helps the reader to be more careful when communicating with strangers, it gives tips on what to expect in what will be a long-lasting marriage and how much information you should disclose and trust in online dating.
Since the book contains some mature content, I recommend it to adults who will understand and really find the information beneficial. Am sure this book will answer the writers’ prayer inscribed on one of the cover pages, to help all those deceived in their intimate relationships and all those who are victims of deceit, to survive an encounter with manipulators whose aims is to exploit them and may they land firmly on their fit.
