Review of Man Mission
By Atsieno Lorine at 11.55p.m
Man Mission by Etyan Utiel is a fascinating story about four men who are eager to explore the world, find new places and in the process finding themselves too.Sam,Daniel,Alec and Etyan were friends who despites their work schedules and raising families they find time for adventure. The four men first adventure in New Zealand generates the idea of them travelling to other fourteen countries. These travel to Thailand,Korea,South America,Peru with Iceland being the fifteenth nation.Even though these four men start their adventures young and naive, with time their mindset changes as they go through these thrilling adventures. They are able to realize what life holds and its meaning. The trips was to be worthy of 'macho' men as the writer narrates involving fun but also activities that push you to the limits of your physical and mental endurance such as hiking and bicycling. There is contrast in the lives of these four men and the people they meet in their adventures. The people they meet have different cultures and backgrounds and through interacting with them they learn new things.
On an individual level, the characters use the contrast between mission life and everyday life to highlight and explore their life challenges. These challenges include their role in the society as well as in their families. As they age, their everyday successes and failures shape them into becoming better men.Through the adventures, the characters are able to find closure especially the narrator. When the narrator learns to open up and communicate with his friends and his family regarding his feelings and emotions,he finds hope and shows that men have emotions too.All the characters are forced to figure out who they are, what they want in life and where they are headed to.They learn to navigate through adulthood life and accepting life as it comes. The narrator and his friends are forced to understand what it means to be a man in today. The narrator explains the many demands of the society to the man and the expectations.
I love that there is use of the first person narration as it makes the book more interesting. The reader is made to feel a if they are present and experiencing the adventures.Adventures are well described which made me feel included and made the story exciting..The story is narrated in a fascinating way.I love that you can find humor in the story especially through their dialogues making the story addictive.Mans Mission author integrates both the characters lives with their adventures trying to explain each character in depth.
However I feel that female characters should have been described in depth. They played an inportant role in creation of the story line and therefore needed more explanation.Their characters were not brought out as expected in the story.
I rate the book a 4 out of 4 stars. The book was exceptionally edited with no grammatical or typing errors. The language is friendly and understandable.I feel that female characters needed to engaged more by having their own dialogues too.I love that it is a travelogue as well as fictional which makes the book interesting to read.Ilove that the narrator made me feel like I was traveeling with them by describing their destinations vividly.
Men looking to find purpose in life would enjoy reading this book as well as lovers of fictional books.People who enjoy reading books filled with adventure will also benefit from reading this book. Also anyone who enjoys books written in the first person narrative would find the book interesting.
