One of the things that we as a society fail to prepare ourselves for is the thing that has the biggest impact on our lives - and that’s aging. In Taking Charge: Vol. 2 More Stories on Aging Boldly, author Herb Weiss shares a collection of his journalistic works to navigate aging; ensuring that his audience comes out on top before, during, and after their Golden Years. Weiss’s journalistic works are grouped together in chapters under appropriate categories in the book. The chapters/categories in the book range from concerns with caregiving to mental and physical health to what older adults contribute to society and beyond.

What I liked most about this book was how digestible the chapters were. The book’s format is what, I believe, makes it so easy to read. Weiss’s passion about aging is apparent in every article as well. No doubt Weiss’s many articles on aging have informed not only a general audience but researchers and lawmakers as well - especially concerning the needs of caregivers and those who need care. In addition, Herb outlines many resources to further sharpen the audiences’ knowledge on aging and to highlight the works of older adults.

There wasn’t much that I didn’t like about this book - or found wrong with it. The book was relatively error free; and I’m guessing that’s because the articles within it had already gone through an editorial process prior to being published in a newspaper. But because they had once been articles, there were a few minor errors involving the first letter of the first word in an article. One other grammatical error that I noticed involved a sentence that was repeated and spliced in two different paragraphs - making an odd end for one paragraph and the start of another (pg 38).

In the end, I rate Taking Charge: Vol. 2 More Stories on Aging Boldly 3 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed reading through articles that Weiss wrote on the topic of aging, but some might find it dry. Especially where there seems to be nothing but statistics in certain articles. Other than that and a few grammatical errors, the book is well put together and insightful.

Being a former student of gerontology, I would normally recommend this book to anyone ages 16 and up. That’s because 1) it’s never too soon to think about how one can make their lives easier as they age and 2) every reader, no matter their age, knows someone who could benefit from the type of information featured in this book. However, I’m just going to recommend this book to anyone interested in the topic of aging in an easy to read format. Especially for folks that study gerontology - as this book has a multitude of statistics and sources.
