Review of Death Ray
Death Ray by Tom King transports the reader through an exciting science-fiction adventure complete with a death ray, military involvement, and ethical dilemmas. Mark Bronson is an engineer who was exiled from the San Francisco technology scene due to his unbending morals. Jobless, Mark was lucky enough to find a low-paying job as a laboratory technician conducting research well below his capability. During his research, he stumbled upon a high-frequency death ray that killed one of the lab rats. Mark struggles throughout the story as he involves the Department of Defence in his startling discovery. He quickly finds out that having such a high level of technology makes the death ray a target that everyone wants. The implications may be catastrophic if the death ray gets into the wrong hands.
I found the book to be an exciting read. I liked the imagination of the author as he took us through a plausible situation in which lethal technology could have significant consequences if it is not used appropriately. The protagonist, Mark, was enjoyable to read. He often had humorous dialogue or thoughts that had me chuckling to myself. I stayed engaged throughout the entire story and read it rather quickly. I appreciated that the book appeared to have been professionally edited, and I did not discover any errors in the story that could cause distraction.
I would recommend the author explains complex technical terms better. I found myself looking up some of the words to help me understand what the reader was inferring. I also found that while Mark’s character was well-developed, some of the supporting characters could have been more refined. For instance, Mark and Sara, his girlfriend, did not seem to be very in love. Mark would make significant decisions without including her and while she would seem upset, it wasn’t enough to make the relationship believable. I would have liked to have seen this relationship have more romance or even angst to show the reader they actually cared for one another.
I give this book 3 out of 4 stars. The premise of the story is interesting, and I enjoyed reading about the adventure that Mark experienced. I would have been even more invested in the book with better overall character development.
I would recommend this book to any science-fiction book lover. The United States military and government are heavily involved in this story and will thrill those readers looking for a thriller that involves such a highly sensitive world.
