Review of Kalayla
Kalayla, written by Jeannie Nicholas, follows the story of an eleven year old, bi-racial girl Kalayla. When Kalayla was younger she lost her father in a tragic accident, leaving her alone with her mother who is hardly ever home because she has to work many hours to provide for Kalayla. Her mother, Maureen, is keeping a dark secret about her past and once Kalayla finds out that her mother has been lying to her for almost all her life she becomes somewhat angry and rebellious. Their landlady, Lena, also experiences a similar tragedy when she loses the lives her two sons and her husband. After meeting Kalayla for the first time she realizes how troubled and similar Kalayla is to her children, so she tries to help Kalayla improve her life, in hopes that she could make up for the fact that she had failed to do so with her own children. She is passionate about helping Kalayla find a purpose for her life and she is there to support Kalayla in difficult situations, refusing to give up on her even though she can be difficult to handle at times.
Kalayla contains lots of informal English which puts the reader at ease and helps the reader feel more comfortable and relaxed while reading the book. Each chapter is written in a different characters' point of view and this makes the story more enjoyable for the reader, because they get to view the story from different angles getting to know each character better and the reader can also understand the book on a deeper level.
Overall, Kalayla is an impressive book, but it can be confusing for many readers because of the fact that it is written in a different characters' point of view in each chapter and although this might allow for a better understanding of the book it could also cause confusion, because certain readers might not be able to follow the story if it is constantly switching from the point of view of one character to the other.
I rate this book a 3 out of 4 stars, it is a well written book which focuses on many issues that we face in today's society and issues that was faced in many societies in the past. One of the main themes of the book is caring for others and sharing love and I feel like it is important for people to read books, like Kalayla, that teaches us about sharing love and caring for others in order to help others live a better life. The book is also interesting and teaches you a lot about life, even though it is fictional and reading Kalayla is a great way to pass time.
I recommend this book to adults and mature teens, this is because the book contains many scenes or flashbacks that could be triggering or overwhelming for younger people. The book also has a deeper meaning behind it and therefore it also calls for a deeper understanding of the contents within the book.
