Review of Strong Heart
This is a review of the book Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon. I was looking for a good read. Hopefully, a great read, and Mr. Sheldon’s book did not disappoint. The book starts with Tom Olson and his friend William (Walleye) and Williams’s adult daughter Myra preparing for a trek into the Cascade Mountains. They were leaving the following day to find and honor Tom’s grandfather (Tom-Tom) at his grave and return a piece of antiquity Tom had brought out of the mountains.
During a mother of all storms, someone was knocking on the door. William answered the door to Tom’s ex-wife, Ruth, and a young lady. Ruth explained that this child, Sarah Cooley was Sam’s granddaughter by their deceased daughter Becky.
Sarah Cooley’s stepfather had gone to Europe for work, and he sent Sarah to her maternal grandparents for the summer. She traveled across the United States alone. She was a skinny 13-year-old with a terrible attitude and a massive chip on her shoulder.
The adults, Tom, William, and Myra, debated postponing the trip or taking Sarah with them. A decision was made to leave as planned the following day and take Sarah along. The unpredictable adventure begins……
There are several positive attributes in Charlie Sheldon’s book Strong Heart. The first, Mr. Sheldon has written a story within a story. The first story is the trek into the Cascade Mountains. The group experienced one challenge after another. The second is when Sarah disappeared for eight days. When she returned, she had a story to tell her group. Could it be a dream? Some events could not be accounted for in a dream. There was a missing finger and a skill set that Sarah did not have before. There is a conflict between Tom and his group and surveyors who want to develop the Olympic National Park. This resulted in a dead surveyor and a destroyed artifact.
Myra made a statement in the book several times, “magic, history or legend.” Mr. Sheldon leaves it to the reader to decide. He spent time in the Pacific Northwest, and his descriptions paint a beautiful picture as the backdrop for his story.
This book is well edited. My review is a 4 out of 4. Mr. Sheldon is a good storyteller. Many readers are looking for a good story, and this could be it. This book Strong Heart has something for everyone. The setting for the story is the Cascade Mountains; there’s nature. The story within the story would appeal to people interested in anthropology, especially the migration patterns from Russia to America.
