The Watchmaker’s Doctor by G. M. T. Schuilling is a soft sci-fi drama book in which we follow Anayala, a bipolar woman that is faced with the opportunity to go back in time on the day of her death. She decides to return to her late teenage years to take a different path in the hopes that this will result in her living a better life than the one she’s been currently living. This is a story about the choices Anayala has made and continues to make and remake to get the life she wants for herself, this is also a story about living with bipolar disorder.

This is a very interesting book with a pretty original premise. The plot promises to take us on a dramatic and heartfelt journey through the old and new life of our protagonist and it delivers that perfectly. Although this book may feel more dramatic or contemporary in some parts than leaning toward science fiction the sci-fi aspects really add to the story and character development.

Although it’s not difficult to imagine this story will be a fast read due to the short amount of pages it never becomes rushed, nor does it become slow at any point, though it may feel like a more calm pace because of all the reflections the protagonist does along with the story as she relives her life and learns more about herself and the people surrounding her. Another very good thing about this book that really improves the experience of reading it is that it seems to be truly well edited, making the story flow more easily without disruptions.

One of the most important things for me when I read a book is the characters, and all of the characters within this book are compelling, complex, and fleshed out, especially Anayala, our protagonist. It was very refreshing to read from the point of view of a character that is bipolar and seeing that be part of the character instead of that becoming the whole character; G. M. T. Schuilling manages to write a bipolar character without demonizing nor romanticizing bipolar disorder, which is very important and not something you get to read every day;

The ending of The Watchmaker’s Doctor leaves a perfect setup for the following in the series, leaving the readers intrigued and curious to know more about its characters and what would happen after some things get revealed along with the book, especially towards the end.

There is nothing bad I could say about this book, so my rating for this is a 4 out of 4 stars. This story follows through on everything it promises in an interesting, emotional, and compelling way. The characters are really well written, and the bipolar representation is pulled off in a very nice manner. Also, this book is professionally edited. I will recommend it to people who like emotional and dramatic books with an extra touch of science fiction, and also to people looking to read about a character with bipolar disorder that is well represented.
