The MECE Muse by Christie Lindor is a book that summarized the practices and the quality of being a great consultant. It articulated the habit, the written and unwritten rules that could help young consultants in climbing the ladder of success. The book is divided into three sections. The first section dealt with the kind of attitude and mindset that great consultants have, which are mostly relationship-driven, positive, and sound ethical practices, among others. The second section dealt with the performance and practices of great consultants. Due to the nature of the consulting profession, Christie Lindor explained the necessities in terms of tools and qualities needed as well as how best to manage relationships which are key in consulting. The last section stressed the importance of experience gathering in consulting and how this is helping her in sailing through in her profession and she rounded up the book with what the future of consulting would be and how best to prepare for the future.

A few things caught my attention while reading. First, is the wealth of experiences that were shared by the top-notch consultant. Consultants emphasized the role of relationships, hard work, mentorship and sponsors and how each of these influenced their career in consulting. Second, as an employee in consulting, I understood that consulting profession can be challenging in a way and the profession could take a larger part of the day, however, the author through her personal experience and also from the interviews, stressed the importance of having a balanced life, combining the family life and work in a most effectively. Third, the book opened my eyes role of relationships. Most of the interviewed personalities stressed the role of family, co-staffs, superiors and mentors in climbing the ladder of success. Fourth, what made a great consultant is the ability to be empathetic rather than apathetic, a listener rather than a much talker, a team player rather than a lone ranger in handling the client’s assigned duties.

Although this book focused directly on the consulting profession, I believe that career progress and advancement in any endeavour follows an equal principle of building a good and consistent work-life, managing relationship with others, preparing and leveraging on opportunities, guidance through mentorship and sponsorship, all these principles are building blocks and were emphasized in the book. However, the interview questions are almost the same all through and one might be tempted of skipping the interview section due to these similarities in questioning, though different answers and opinions. One thing I would love to see in the next edition of the book is to have more dynamic interviews with different questions with different consultants and even have a few professionals in other fields aside from consulting share their thoughts on career progress and advancement. This would make the book more dynamic and unpredictable.

As the world is changing, consulting profession remains dynamic and evolving. Thus, I recommend this book to young consultants, corporate leaders, graduate students, and anyone in the corporate society as this book will be a foundational guide.

The book is well-edited, although no book is 100% error-free as I found a few errors and grammatical mistakes, this did not hinder me from rating the book well. Therefore, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
