The Unlikely Cowboy by James E. Doucette is a story about the western lifestyle. The main protagonist is a retired New York cop who decided to move to West Texas and start a new life after getting involved in a bad incident in his job. This event led him to quit definitely his life as a cop and motivated him to seek a new start. He lost his wife and son in earlier years therefore he had nothing to keep him in New York. Consequently, he chose to live in West Texas following the recommendation of his friend, and there he opened a gun repair shop. He discovered the carefree western lifestyle and learned along how to let go of his past demons and build new relationships and a new career. Unfortunately, he became a target for a Mexican cartel that followed him and disturbed his new life.

The parts that I liked the most about the book were how it described the cowboy lifestyle especially the cattle work on the canyon ranch and the natural sceneries. Additionally, the transition from living in New York to West Texas was described accurately and it highlighted the contrast between the two different regions. Moreover, it demonstrated the slow paced calm life in Texas and the bonding in the small rural community through the relationships between the different characters. Some sceneries included in the book were inspired from true places in Texas; the author added a section in the beginning of the book that precise them which made the story more relatable and relevant.

The story is too fast-paced, the events were related swiftly; thus, the reader is taken from one moment to the other. Although, this rapid succession didn’t raise contradictions and ran smoothly, it didn’t give the reader much description which I fancied and longed for in some parts of the story.

For the reasons I stated above, I gave this book 2 out of 4 stars. Nevertheless, I should mention that the book was exceptionally well edited since I found no errors.

This book is suitable for everyone except the younger audience since it contains some violent scenes and clashes with a Mexican cartel. Hence, I would recommend it to all adults who enjoy outdoor activities and are looking for an easy light book to read. It related a story about loss and new beginnings, it provided an example of how people can change their lives and start anew despite of their old experiences and age.
