Beyond the Higher Ground is a work of fiction by Thomas A. Brigger. The story covers the life of Mason Tucker while he oversees the building of a prison on Bright’s Mountain. On his arrival, he encountered strange events and people that should have made him rethink his stay at Ansel’s house. Most people who had lived around the area had implied that there was something sinister about the house, and events that supported that theory happened one after another. But were there paranormal happenings in the house?

This book peals layers of mysteries and crime one after another. The protagonist is caught in the middle of drug trafficking, organized crime, and hidden treasures. He happens to be 'some trouble' that needed scaring off or elimination. Read Beyond the Higher Ground to see if he scampers away at the first threat or the second clue to danger.

There were many aspects I relished in this book. The plot was captivating, with bends of horror and turns of tables. The story was artistically told, with events looping evenly into each other. Characters were well-developed to the point of understanding their reasons for the actions they took. The narration was from the third person's perspective. That did not dilute the emotions in the story. I felt the horror of Mason when he was knocked over by a truck and warned to stay away. The emotional torments of Mason were clear throughout the story.

I did not like that some sentences were very long. I counted one hundred and eight words in a single sentence. However, the long sentences were satisfactorily punctuated. Other than that, the story had a natural flow with an edge of horror and mystery. The book was professionally edited. This is because I did not see even a single typo.

I rate this work 4 out of 4. I could not give a lower rating because the story was interesting, and the protagonist was so human and relatable. Apart from that, the variety of characters with different life stories made the story a masterpiece. Sally was an amiable businesswoman and an exemplary mother. Cecil Beckman and Jeff we're different in reality, yet similar at the same time.

I recommend Beyond the Higher Ground to readers of mystery, crime fiction, and horror. People who love action-packed stories with a feeling of reality will enjoy the writing. People struggling with the death of a loved one will identify with Mason. The book also portrays the effects of drug and substance abuse.
