The Unlikely Cowboy is a fiction book by James E. Doucette. This book follows Joe D’Angelo as he navigates life after losing his family.

Pablo informs Chico that he is sending him to Texas, and Hector lies to his grandmother. Joe accidentally shoots a robber, and Junior is arrested. Joe’s badge is confiscated, and he tells Kyle of the tragic loss he has experienced. Placed on an administrative leave, Joe feels disheartened. Kyle suggests for Joe to move to Texas. Joe is cleared of the murder charges, but he is retiring. Willy thanks Joe for not shooting his son. Joe reminisces of the past and thinks of the new chapter of his life as he drives to Texas. Joe arrives at Kyle’s house, and Sue confides to Clint and Emma about her impending divorce. Joe is surprised that everyone in Texas already knows his story. After settling in Texas, Joe develops a comfortable work routine. Joe’s weapon knowledge sparks his popularity, and Willy finds out about his son’s fate. Joe is excited to spend Christmas with Rowdy and his family. Pablo wants to get rid of Joe. Megan and Joe start spending more time together. Sue and Rachel talk to Joe about his feelings for Megan. The plan to assassinate Joe is underway, and Joe agrees to be Brad’s best man. Grimstad collaborates with Joe to trap Macho. Later, Macho agrees to cooperate with Grimstad. Megan tells Joe her life story. Joe and Megan get married.

The Unlikely Cowboy is narrated in the third person point of view. This book is descriptive, but the plot is not dragged out. There is a good balance in the narration that makes the phasing of the storyline not too fast, but also not too slow. This makes readers tune into the story without feeling bored. This book does not contain any profanities and erotic scenes. The book was also well edited because I did not find any grammatical errors.

The character development in this book is great. I love how well-rounded these characters are. I also love the relationships between the characters. The author did an impressive job portraying healthy relationships. It was amazing to see that while these characters have good characteristics, they also had flaws. I love how Joe and Megan’s relationship grew. It was such a stable, warm, and beautiful relationship.

The story development in this book is captivating. There is always something going on, but it is not too much to the point where it is confusing. The storyline focuses on multiple characters and their growth. This book has strong themes such as second chances, friendship, and justice. I also have to mention that the author presents these themes beautifully.

There is nothing I did not like about this book. What I loved about this book is the strong character development, and the captivating storyline. I rate this book 4 out of 4. Not only was it fun to follow Joe as he builds a new life for himself, but this book also presents healthy relationships and friendships. I also liked Rachel and Sue’s friendship. I recommend this book to readers who want to read a light, fun, and captivating book.
