Review of Why Can't Johnny Just Quit?
Addiction is described as the inability to stop taking a substance or engaging in a habit despite the fact that it is harming one's mental and physical health. We never pause to think about what caused someone to become an addict whenever we encounter someone we suspect is an addict. Kyle Oh's book, Why Can't Johnny Just Quit?: A Common Sense Guide to Understanding Addiction, aims to provide insight into drug and alcohol addiction. This book explains the differences between abuse and addiction in a clear and concise manner. The author also discusses ways to avoid being addicted. Have you ever questioned why a family member or acquaintance is addicted? Have you ever inquired as to how the medicine affected them? This book provides insight into the diagnosis and prevention of addiction.
This book contained a wealth of important information. I've never read a book that takes this approach to addiction. According to Kyle Oh, the true question we should be asking our addicted loved ones is how the drug makes them feel. This will reveal whether they are addicted or not. According to him, an addicted individual feels ecstatic when they use the substance, whereas a non-addict only feels groggy. This new information offered by the author is worth investigating. He also claims that people who experience euphoric feelings will experience withdrawal symptoms. Those who are not truly addicted can abruptly stop without suffering any consequences.
Why Can't Johnny Just Quit?: A Common Sense Guide to Understanding Addiction is a medical book without the difficult-to-understand medical jargon. The writing style was basic and entertaining, which I appreciated. There was nothing about the book that I didn't like. Kyle Oh appears to be really concerned about his patients' well-being. His notion of how to avoid addiction is pretty insightful. Reading the case studies was also a lot of fun.
Because it was really well-edited, I didn't find a single mistake while reading this book. It no doubt deserves a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. The author proposes that you ask yourself three major questions to determine if you are becoming addicted to a drug. Do you feel stimulated by a low dose of the drug? Is there a link between medicine and insomnia? Do you get a great buzz from the drug? Answering these questions may assist you in determining what strategies to take to combat addiction.
I would strongly advise kids and parents to read this book. This is a book you should read if you think you might be prone to drug abuse, misuse, or addiction. This book's material may also be valuable to medical researchers.
