Review of E M P Honeymoon
Tom, a decorated cop from Carson City, and Kelly, a computer geek, are on their honeymoon, living it up in their rented beachfront villa in beautiful Honduras. They are oblivious to the danger that lurks on the island until Kelly stumbles upon a hidden lab full of high-tech computers. They both decide to loop in Kelly's brother, Senator Mike McBride, to help make sense of the discovery. He seeks help from his security team and CIA connections. It is only a matter of time until the US military and president get roped into the happenings in Honduras.
On the other side of the world, Dear Leader, the president of Homeland, is plotting the downfall of the USA. He entrusts his plan to General Lee and Colonel Rhee Su-Jin. The trio devises a plot to make the US vulnerable to an invasion. The covert attack weapon developed is so top-secret that no scientist who has worked on it is released back into the general population. Dear Leader did not account for the honeymooning couple in Honduras, their powerful US government connections, and an escaped scientist jeopardizing his whole operation. These unlikely events are the heart of this action-packed sci-fi book.
I must say nothing prepared me for the fast-paced nature of the book EMP Honeymoon by Dorothy May Mercer. It is an exhilarating read, spanning two continents and multiple characters. The comic relief provided by the exchanges between the US president and Dear Leader lightens the overall mood and complexity of the plot. I found the escape by the scientist Kim Jung Lo ingenious, practical, and well-thought-out. The characters are well-developed, each playing a pivotal role in the story. I loved how the author sprinkled just the right amount of romance between the characters. For example, the budding romance between Sharon and the CIA agent was enough to keep me wanting more to happen between the two. The book is also exceptionally well-edited.
The one thing that takes away from the book is its outline. The introduction of subtitles whenever the scene changes create an unnecessary interruption in reading. It was the only negative thing I found. As a result, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.
I would recommend this book to lovers of fiction and crime thrillers. Readers who love stories on the geopolitical power struggle between the East and West will enjoy the euphemisms portrayed in the book, making it is a most satisfying read.
