Review of Double Redemption
Double Redemption by Francis Gene Collins explores the romance between Emma and Mike. It uses flashback to delve into the lives of the two characters and the challenges they encountered to warrant redemption, as the title suggested. The struggles the two faced were both valid and heart wrenching. Mike suffered one too many blows during his time in the Marines that left him dejected and suicidal, whilst Emma’s childhood nightmare left her blaming herself and choosing to punish herself at every turn. Despite these challenges, they find a champion in each other as well as a part of themselves they thought long gone. With help from friends and surrogate families, their love for each other proved to be the final healing balm they needed to find their respective redemption.
The authors use of narration to uplift the character and the reader was the highlight of this book. He had me laughing at the driest of jokes and random but poignant dialogue. The dry humour made even the saddest story more palatable. I truly thought this would have been a romance novel, but when Collins started having dialogue about dogs thinking a well-groomed child smelled bad, I had to wonder. Collins did not work only with plot, scenery and characters, but the narration was truly pleasing to the soul. Each conversation seemed meaningful and uplifted not only the protagonist but also the reader, either with levity or with sound wisdom.
The book had a masterful plot but required further editing. Throughout the novel, grammatical errors were sprinkled through it. ‘…He said as [he] walked around to the front of the Gray Lady’ is one example that was displeasing to read and easily corrected with another round of editing. Grammatical errors took away from the flow of the story and were my main concern.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The novel was masterfully narrated to provide romance, upliftment and suspense. Due to the grammatical errors as previously indicated, I could not award a perfect score. Overall, the errors were not too grave as to make the book unpalatable . Rather, despite the errors, I do believe this is a great book and would recommend it to others.
This novel is for anyone who wants a happily-ever after with a beautifully written plot. From young adults to retirees, this romance would make the reader smile. Also, this novel would be well received by readers looking for an uplifting story. Due to the use of violence and non-consensual sex scenes, I would advise that reader discretion is warranted.
