Review of Incentives
“Pure unadulterated fun!” is what you are promised on the cover of this book and that is exactly what George Franklin gives you in Incentives: The Holy Water of Free Enterprise. As the book opens, we’re introduced to its cast and characters. They’re a hodgepodge of liars, fraudsters and crooks with one thing in common; the will to make money – easily, and without using any of their own for the start-up cost.
Our key players are Red Johansson, who works on the arm of the local government of Battle Creek First in Glenn where our story is based. He is also the glue that brings our characters together; his wife, Ingrid, because one thing you will learn as this book continues is that successful corruption is a team sport. We also have Bogey, Skeeter, Rosa, Armando, Boone and his entourage, Sean and Paddy and some government officials. With the help of Red, we’re able to follow the hilarious journeys of these would-be, criminally inclined characters as they make use of every government handout, incentive package and right off on their way to their respective tops. I believe the nature of their individual entrepreneurial pursuits will have some clutching their pearls and scratching their heads that they're allowed and even encouraged to do what they do.
What I enjoyed most about this book is the writing. It is consistent throughout and the narrator is extremely intelligent and funny. The book is a no-nonsense social commentary on how deep corruption runs. It is never a one-person job but instead is the joint efforts of many people with the desire to enrich themselves even at the expense of the public at large. This book made me think, which, to me is a hallmark of a good book. This book shines a light on how the places and people who are acknowledged by the government and the state to be the most in need of help are often never given help and instead are exploited even further.
A drawback but not a dealbreaker for me was that it felt like there was a lot of exposition on the characters and their plans and then suddenly the book picked up and moved very quickly towards the end. It felt like the ‘incidents’ -because they are so absurd in nature- that occur happen very suddenly and are just there to move the book along and get it over with. That said, I did enjoy the reading experience from start to finish.
I would rate this book three out of four stars. The book was definitely fun and enjoyable. I think this book was edited but needs a final edit. I would read this book again.
I recommend this to anyone who enjoys general fiction. If you like a fun read, social commentary books and don’t mind a bit of swearing and off-colour, not-always-politically-correct jokes, this book is for you.
