Beyond the higher ground by Thomas A. Brigger touches on various issues and events that occur in day to day life. The author goes on to give an account of Tucker Mason, our protagonist as he struggles to restart his life after the death of his wife. He is haunted by the death of his younger brother and loneliness from his childhood after his parents separate due to addiction problems leaving him in the care of his grandparents. Mason, who is a construction manager moves to Southwest Virginia to work on a prison building project. The book takes us through the drug crisis in the region and the mysteries that unveil in Mason's life which are brought up by his rental decision to live atop the mountain.

I like how the book touches on current events as they unveil such as the drug crisis which most people struggle to deal with. I like how the people in the region are dedicated to ending the crisis. Cletus Wellman, a wealthy business man comes up with a program to deal with drug dealers and wills to fund it to see it go through. This refelcts on most of the folk who are good willed people. This is also apparent when some warn Mason to vacate his rented house whose former inhabitants had died from what was believed to be murder.

I generally liked everything about the book and its well laid out events in good chronological order. It gives a glimpse to the drug crisis imminent in our daily lives. The book is interesting and fun to read reeling the reader in to know how events eventually unveil. I don't think there is any negative point to it.

Overall, I will give the book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I found only a few errors while reading. The book seems professionally edited. I like how its events are well laid making it easy to follow up.

The book appeals to readers who like good storytelling, strong character development and a revelation to current events. However, it contains various death cases hence not suitable to sensitive readers and children.
