Twisted but True by Darren Burch is an insight to what a day, or days, in the life of a police person. The book comes of to be some form of a biography, perhaps even a memoire of memories. It tells of a man who has not only been through his own trauma and life altering events, but also had to endure several others’ life ordeals. The first scene is an explanation as to his reason for choosing this career path. As a result of that he now has many tales to tell the world. Sharing them with those who might have an interest in the same line of work, encouraging and warning them. His tales have you giggling and infuriated at both the suspects as well as some “victims”. These tales paint a very colorful and exciting life, albeit scary, dangerous and cruel.

I was surprised at my final thought of the book. With stories from horrific accident witnessed by young people to the Burch’s final days as a director of several charitable activist groups, he really sounds like a good guy. I enjoyed the humorous takes on the tragic events he wrote about, having a twisted humor myself. Another great idea by the author was the warning clearly stated on one of the earliest pages, warning readers that there are definitely graphic scenes in this book. It is this type of consideration the made me want to keep reading.

That is also the downside of the book. It has extremely graphic and horrific depictions of scenes throughout many chapters. It takes a really strong stomach to read past the gruesome scenes and to the moral of each story. That said, there are many other red flags for those with frail constitutions, such as the language, even if it is direct quotes from assailants and criminals. Then again, that is most likely the reason for the warning at the beginning.

So, apart from a couple of errors I noticed and of course the language previously mentioned, I very much enjoyed the recollections of an intensely eventful life. Therefore, it is my reason to rate this book with a 3 out of 4 stars. It truly is eye opening.

As the warning suggest on one of the earliest of pages, this book id not suited for all. I would recommend it to a mature audience. Those without a weak stomach, squeamish nature, underaged or sensitive to gruesome scenes. If you have one or more of these traits, do not read it.

I do not enjoy books that contain horrifying scenes but I also want to know how Burch was able to strive even in his bad situations. Thanks for the review.
