Review of Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks
Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks: A Physician's Advice by Morton E. Tavel is a non-fiction novel with three main goals: First, to educate its readers on various health tips that are critical in losing weight, preventing cardiovascular diseases, choosing healthy foods, and general health tips; second, to dispel various myths that are spread by dubious information obtained via the Internet, television shows, and newspaper advertisements; and third, to expose the tricks used by many drug and food companies to entice more money from their buyers in exchange for their products. Many individuals nowadays are concerned about eating a nutritious diet to avoid heart disease and some types of cancer, as well as employing safe, side-effect-free treatment methods. Today's population is, unfortunately, more overweight or obese than ever before. Almost everyone seems to be looking for knowledge on healthy diet and overall wellness.
Dr. Tavel, a retired internal medicine and cardiovascular disease specialist who was also a clinical professor at Indiana University School of Medicine, has done an excellent job of explaining how to spot "snake oil vendors" and fact-check their dubious information spread by "alternative medicine" proponents. He expertly examines different fallacies that have crowded our Internet and advertisements over a few decades as an experienced researcher who has written over one hundred and twenty medical research papers. The author lists certain foods that are beneficial to our health as well as those that are harmful. He discusses the dangers of trans fats, too much table salt, red meat, and many other foods. He also debunks some of the common misconceptions about genetically engineered foods, cell phones, vaccines, water fluoridation, alternative treatments, and other topics. He claims that many Americans have chosen dubious treatments, ranging from those that are just unproven to those that are outright scams.
Alternative medicine practitioners, spinal manipulation, acupuncture, and other techniques are among them. Dr. Tavel's easy-to-understand explanations pleased me as I read this book. Despite my lack of medical knowledge, I was able to easily read and comprehend his explanations. His ideas were backed up by a slew of peer-reviewed publications, demonstrating that his explanations were not only scientifically sound, but also trustworthy.
For a long time, I believed that genetically engineered foods were unfit for human consumption. Dr. Tavel, on the other hand, debunks such myths, pointing out that there are no scientific proofs supporting them. Instead, he cites recent studies that show that GM foods have no negative health consequences or nutritional shortfalls when compared to natural foods. He further claims that such foods are not only healthy for humans but also for the environment. Overall, I think Dr. Tavel did a good job on his homework, and I learnt a lot from this book.
The opening section of this novel, "Health Tips," is still my favorite; I learned a lot of new information about healthy eating practices. In terms of the negative, I did notice a few instances of punctuation problems and typos. Despite these flaws, I can still state that the book was expertly edited. I rate Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks: A Physician's Advice by Morton E Tavel four out of four stars. Nothing less than the value of the information, good editing, and simple explanations deserved to be included.
I enthusiastically recommend this book to people who are interested in cardiovascular disease prevention. Those who are having difficulty reducing weight will find this book useful. I can see this book appealing to those interested in fact-checking the validity of common health-related myths. Nonetheless, this is not a book that youngsters should read because the topics discussed in it are beyond their comprehension.
