Review of Why Can't Johnny Just Quit?
Most people have a poor perception and understanding of addiction. The book Why Can't Johnny Just Quit? by Kyle Oh explains the true meaning of addiction and why some people get addicted to alcohol and opiates and others don't. It tries to clarify the perception people have that addiction is a coping mechanism for one's underlying illnesses or stress.
Kyle Oh is a pain management specialist and had to learn and research after terrible things happened to his patients like death due to overdosing on OxyContin. The writer defines addiction as a disease of the brain that happens when a person susceptible genetically to a drug is exposed to the drug and creates a high feeling and the person gets an urge to chase the feeling. When the pleasure spot is overstimulated repeatedly, the brain becomes rewired and the person starts having cravings. He goes on to explain that true high is not characterized by a dopey and sleepy feeling as most people think but by extreme joy and euphoric feeling. Not everyone experiences this and thus not everyone gets addicted to a drug. Those who experience a euphoric feeling are the ones who get addicted in an attempt to chase the feeling.
The book is interesting to reading as it explains medically the concept of addiction. It eliminates the many misconceptions that we have been fed about addiction. I love how the writer explains step by step in a simple way that even those that do not have medical background can understand. The thoughts have been well arranged in chapters that are easy to follow and understand. He has also put links and resources which are helpful to readers who want to research and get more information. The narration of his patients' experiences at the end was important as it shows how easy it is to get addicted and offers hope that one can overcome addiction.
What I disliked about the book is at some point in the second half it was repetitive. Though the writer says it is for the sake of highlighting important points, it became boring reading the same content.
I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars as it had some errors though they did not hinder me from enjoying the book. I recommend the book to everyone from teenagers to adults. The book will give insight to anyone who is not yet addicted on how to prevent themselves. With understanding, if one experiences excitement after consuming a drug one should stop because this is a sign they are genetically susceptible to becoming addicted to the drug and they should stop before it is too late. Those who are addicts or have loved ones who are addicts will understand better the reason why and give them care and love. It also offers hope that addiction can be overcome by seeking help.
