Review of Rise of the Savior
Amanda, an 18-year-old teen, has plans to go to college and compete in karate. All these changes when she is about to lose her life in a road accident with her dad, which awakens the kundalini buried within her. A deity chooses her to become the acolyte of truth. She discovers she has special powers that allow her to know when someone is lying and summon guns that release bullets that her mind can manipulate. This particular acolyte is expected to protect the world from evil. Amanda has a 6-year-old sister whom she tries to figure out due to her mysterious and intelligent nature. She also has special powers and a brilliant mind that comes in handy when sketching plans. She helps Amanda understand their nature better. They work together with other acolytes they meet on the way to stop a villain, Jamie, the acolyte of death, who kidnaps children and destroys anything in his way to save his dying son.
The book was intriguing, fast-paced, and certainly a unique story. It has a great blend of sci-fi, fantasy, and dystopian thriller, which is my gem. I genuinely liked the book. It was well written, but the storyline was really difficult to follow. There were so many characters that I had to keep track of, which confused me for a while. A lot was also happening that I kept re-reading to make sure I did not skip any important points. Most of the characters were morally flexible, which made it difficult to emphasize with them. The story is also told in the third person, making it difficult to connect and understand any of the characters deeply. However, I remained glued to this book, which excited me to know more and what will happen next.
The notion of this book grabbed my attention, but I was disappointed with how the story is told, it felt like I was reading a manga that has been changed to a novel, but I loved how Antoine used humor within the dialogues which made the book stay alive. The characters were also well developed, although some were annoying. I loved that Amanda and her sister Saira, who showed no emotions, started building a stronger relationship throughout the book. Amanda also meets new friends who come through for her and protect her.
Just a warning, the book contains very many violent scenes. If you are light-hearted, I wouldn’t recommend it. Overall, Rise of the Savior is an okay read. If you are a fan of dystopian fantasies or sci-fi, I recommend this book.
I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because, unfortunately, I found some parts very confusing and unrealistic.
