Review of No Dark Clouds
"Dark clouds and fear surrounds me, is there a light with answers, why is my life in shambles, does anyone really care at all?" This is the lamentation of Aditya a beggar girl whose agony is not only compounded by her size but also by her cruel taskmaster.
Taskmaster, a rough bearded middle aged man whose means of livelihood is to assemble a group of orphans and homeless children to beg and earn money. He had in his collection six children with physical disabilities which he uses to his advantage. If he was not satisfied with the amount of money made each day the children were forbidden to eat that night. Among the beggar children is Rebakah, a ten year old beautiful girl with no left arm. She is endowed with a remarkable gift of memory and intelligence so much that at that tender age, she taught herself to read Aramaic and Hebrew.
While she was begging, she came across beggar boy, a ten year old with five permanent scars crisscrossing his face sitting on a dusty street begging. Beggar boy is a remarkable character. He is not among the six beggar children owned by taskmaster, his encounter with centurion Leonidas whose life he saved in a scuffle with Barabas and his zealots and later with mishea, an Ethiopian tutor to the high ranking Roman family led him to a personal encounter with Jesus Christ.
No Dark Clouds by R.W. Nelson is a Christian fiction set in biblical Jerusalem. It is the first Christian fiction novel I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There are two things i like most about the novel. Firstly, I like the infusion of the fictional characters with popular historical biblical figures and secondly, I like the manner in which the author developed the characters. The story is highly emotional. The beggar children are symbols of societal struggle in our modern world. Their physical deformities makes their plight unbearable.
That been said, i enjoy every character in the novel. For instance, I admire Aditya for her tender heart. She nursed Figs (a blind and mute beggar child) until his demise. Figs' story is heart wrenching, he was born blind and mute and his only means of communication was a nail spike attached to his hand. My favorite character is beggar boy. He is street smart and brave. One incident of bravery was when he had to take on four hoodlums all by himself. There were happy moments for me and that was when Baa Foo and deformed infant were healed by Jesus Christ and I will also not forget beggar boy's healing after much perseverance.
The only thing I dislike about the book is the way the story ended. I thought that was a flaw. I found only two grammatical errors for a book of 314 page length I commend the editors. There is no sexual content or profane language. It is a Christian fiction novel with scriptural passages and bible study lessons. Like I mentioned above the end of the story is not satisfactory and for that reason, I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars. That was the only hitch that took away the flow of the book. I personally learnt a lot and would definitely read it over and over again. I recommend this book to lovers of Christian fiction and Christian religious teachers. It has quality bible study themes that is worth learning.
