Running the Sahara is an exquisite novel authored by Marcel Nickler. This story captures the author’s journey in which he participates in the Marathon des Sables that is usually held in the desert.

The author captures his journey in the desert as a participant of the Marathon des Sables. Marcel Nickler has always had a passion for running and he had participated in several running events and but he had never participated in this marathon therefore it was a new challenge to him. He explains the joy, happiness and struggles that he experienced within the period of the marathon. It took seven days for the marathon to come to an end and through each day the participants of the marathon together with the organizers had set a target which they intended to achieve. He also goes further to explain that the heat in the desert, rocks and sand dunes made it difficult for him and his fellow participants to get through the challenge but their unity and persistence helped them to get to the final point. The author also gives the readers a peak of Moroccan culture by mentioning various foods, markets and a friend that he had made in Morocco. He also talks about the importance of possessing knowledge and skills and sharing the skills that a person has accumulated from their life. Some of the marathon participants had been there before and they had shared with him some ideas that would help him in tackling the challenge in a more efficient manner and he attributes that this contributed to his success and therefore he encourages the reader to share their skills and knowledge with the people around them.

The positive aspect I found about this book is that it contains the aspect of discipline, planning and achieving your goals. The author also provides real life examples from his own experiences and this can help the reader to understand the struggles that they may face if they took this kind of a challenge and how to tackle it. He has also provided the essentials that he had carried to the event and this would be helpful to a person who is planning to partake in such an event.

This book was well edited and I did not find any negative aspects about it.

I would rate this book a four out four. It is well written and its plot flows continuously. The author has also used captivating pictures on the last pages of the books and this can help the reader in understanding the kind of event that he participated in.

I would recommend this book to persons who are interested in participating in marathons or a person who would like to try to participate in one.
