Review of Hattie Vavaseur
The tale titled Hattie Vavaseur was written by M. Rebecca Wildsmith. A fantasy, mystery and supernatural novel that follows a woman by the same name, Hattie, who is seemingly an old but rich person with difficulty remembering things of her surroundings and as well as her life. The book takes the reader on a journey full of unimaginable and suspenseful mysteries through her eyes.
At a funeral, Hattie finds a chauffeur waiting for her, to take her somewhere. She climbed inside the car and found herself in front of a huge and unkempt mansion. Unable to recollect the reason for her arrival, she went inside it to find the answer to that. There she met the unfamiliar owner, who appeared surly and frigid towards her. Suspicions aroused in her mind when she found the servants strange behaviour, the weird atmosphere of the place, and her unknown reason for the stay. Given these circumstances, she seeks to find the reason behind all. Her sudden visit to an occultist named Vamelda revealed the biggest mystery of her life. This initiated the unfolding of the mysteries and secrets of the mansion’s master, her memories and other truths related to her past.
The book was a whirlwind of mystery and humour, with an engaging story of wonderful and quirky characters. My favourite parts were when the plot followed Hattie in her endeavours along with her witty and varying conversations with each character. Especially Vamelda, the occultist, who never missed a chance of her funny banter. Also, her dramatic abilities to her guests in the showroom. I loved the author's idea of Hattie becoming younger the closer she reached her goal. It added to the suspense of the plot.
The character Trixie was one of the most interesting and humorous personalities I found among others. I loved the parts where Vamelda's friend has been shown, it gave a brisk aspect to the storyline. The paranormal effect and the uncanny feel, provided by the author was intact throughout the book. It kept me at the edge of the seat, till the end.
The flow of the book was perfect. I didn’t find myself getting bored in the middle of reading. I loved the dose of vocabulary the book included, it was indulging and knowledgeable. The humour incorporated into the text gave a refreshing touch to the storyline along with the suspense and mystery. The book gave a fairy tale impression during the climax of the plot and was action-packed with a happy ending. I didn’t find anything which was not to my liking in the book.
I would gladly give this book a 4 out of 4 stars, because of its amazing characters, its funny but spooky storyline covered with mystery. The text has been professionally edited without any mistakes. Also, it didn't have any profanity but had a few violent scenes. People who are fond of mysterious supernatural stories should read this one.
