Review of The Attuned
The Attuned by Gary B. Haley is a fictional novel, which continues the story of a vigilante who is constantly evading either the FBI or hardened criminals. He has the power to control people’s bodily functions with his mind, thus he also has the ability to kill the bad guys who stain the world or try to come after him or a good person in need of help. This book is a sequel to the book, The Attunement. The Attuned therefore, aids in giving clarity on an important cliff-hanger that readers of the previous book were left with.
I found this book to be a very gripping read. The story is told from the protagonist’s point of view, thus I found it easy and very natural to empathize with him. I would worry whenever he found himself in a tight corner, and I would celebrate his wins as well. There is also a fair amount of traveling which is done by the different characters in the book, so I would find myself in a vast Iranian desert at one moment, and then in Canada at the next. I also appreciated the personalities that I came across, as they ended up feeling like real people that I might like to meet someday. Carla, who is the protagonist’s girlfriend, for example, is a tough FBI agent with an endless supply of dry humor. Without revealing too much, I can say that she cleverly maneuvered her way out of a lot of sticky situations.
As much as I really enjoyed the book, there were a few parts in it that I found difficult to reconcile with the story in its entirety. There were, for example, characters whose stories ended up being loose ends. I had expected something to become of their inclusion, but they just trailed off into obscurity. The only plausible reason I could conjure up is that perhaps if there is a follow-up to this book, the characters might have more substantial roles then. Another element that I found strange is that there was no actual name assigned to the lead character. He did have aliases that he gave to people, such as James. It is reasonable to assume that this is due to the fact that he was a hunted down man, thus mystery around his identity was important. That being said, I simply found it strange going through the entire book without knowing the main character’s name.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. It contains a fair amount of action, a hint of romance, and enough mystery to keep the reader guessing right up until the end. The book is also exceptionally edited, and I found not a single grammatical or spelling error. I was also able to understand the story without having read the prequel to the book. The only reason I held back a star is because of the few characters that seemed to have no real contribution to the overall story. I would have also liked some sort of name to use in reference to the protagonist.
I would not recommend this book to young or sensitive readers, as it contains violence and some profanity. Readers who are fans of action and thrillers will definitely enjoy this one. Although there is a slight hint at romance, I would not recommend it to anyone who is strictly looking for this. If you like tucking into a good adventure with near misses, thrilling situations, and people with superpowers, I would definitely urge you to give this book a try.
