Review of Beneath the Muscle
Beneath the Muscle: Unleash Your Inner Champion, a non-fiction motivational book by Lauren Powers, details the author's path from infancy to bodybuilding stardom. She talked about the obstacles she had to overcome on her road to becoming a ten-time heavyweight bodybuilding champion, surfing teacher, actress, firefighter, entrepreneur, and CEO of Powers Fitness Events. She wrote this book to give hope to individuals who are battling to find their inner champion.
The author took the readers on a journey through her upbringing, starting with her parents' young love and subsequent divorce after three years, which forced her to live with her grandparents. Lauren had several strong women in her life who inspired her positively as she grew up, including her mother, aunt Colette, grandmother, and Cousin Shelly. She succeeded in school and graduated from the University of Hawaii with a bachelor's degree in business administration. Lauren, like everyone else, didn't have it easy; at one point in her life, she became a drug addict, but she was able to pick herself up and get clean. She became a firefighter at the age of 33, and a week before her 40th birthday, she entered a bodybuilding competition, where she won.
What I like best about this book is Lauren's writing style. She didn't only talk about her achievements; she also talked about her flaws and how she overcame them to become a better version of herself personally and professionally. I liked how she acknowledged that her methods and advice might not be appropriate in every case. She advises that when professional assistance is required, one should seek it from a qualified specialist.
Powers' book provided me with vital life lessons. The book came with a free workbook for readers. I also appreciated that she included photographs of herself from childhood through adulthood, as well as photographs of prominent celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez, to name a few, which added to the book's appeal to readers.
The grammar is easy to read and comprehend. While reading this book, I did not come across any grammatical errors. T the book is free of profanity, it is suitable for readers of all ages. Because I found some editing issues in the book, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Overall, I loved reading this book and would recommend it to anyone who is unsatisfied or in need of positivity and encouragement.
